Hexham

2009.11.06
Hexham Abbey was built in the 13th century.

Big place for a little town.

This chalice marking is on the lid of a Saxon grave. Liked their wine.

This is the bishop's seat from the original church on the site, completed in 674

This crypt was part of the 674 church.

A lot of the building stones were, like these, recycled from Roman buildings. The 13th century abbey has a lot of Hadrian's Wall stones in it.

You can just see the Latin inscriptions on these ceiling stones. The letters faced out so as to give the plaster covering a key.

ShangriLa Fantastic. Thanks. I'd love to go and sit in a big old cathedral like that right now. Alas there are none here.
